RICHARD AND PAM BEWES were married in July 2012, both of them having known earlier bereavements. Today, from their home in Surrey, England, they travel and minister both far and near, but always giving priority to their two families and the 11 grandchildren they now share.
Richard, for his part, was born and raised by famous missionary parents on the lower slopes of Mt Kenya – along with his two brothers and sister; ‘a most tranquil upbringing.'
Richard came to England for his secondary education, before going to Cambridge University. He then went on to study at Ridley Hall College for the ordained ministry of the Church of England. After leading two churches in England’s south-east with his earlier wife Liz, Richard became Rector of London’s All Souls, Langham Place. Its international nature (with 70 nationalities) continued to develop, with some 2,500 coming through its doors every Sunday. He chaired the Church of England Evangelical Council throughout the 1990s, as also the evangelistic UK work of African Enterprise, remaining involved on its Board until this day.
He continues to serve on the British Board of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, and chaired Mr Graham’s Greater London Mission 89 that centered for three weeks on West Ham grounds, Crystal Palace and Earls Court - ending finally at Wembley Stadium.
A preacher, pastor, broadcaster and hymn-writer, Richard’s speaking engagements have taken him into central and eastern Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia and north America. He has written over 20 books, some of which have been translated into such languages as Korean, German, Spanish, Romanian, Arabic, Norwegian, Chinese and Italian.
The books include such titles as The Top 100 Questions, Beginning the Christian Life, The Lamb Wins (on the Book of Revelation), The Goodnight Book, and his most recent title Equipped to Serve. They are all published by CHRISTIAN FOCUS PUBLICATIONS - and smaller titles by LION PUBLISHING. An illustrated coffee table book is John Wesley’s England.
With Dr. Paul Blackham, Richard also hosts the TV and DVD programmes Open Home Open Bible, and Book by Book – thanks to the professional work of Vivid Broadcast in UK, and Vision Video in the USA who make these 15-minute programmes available for a viewing audience conservatively estimated at over a million every day.
In 2010 a new venture was begun in the TV filming of short sermons of 15 minutes each, delivered by an ever-growing team of international preachers - professionally made by Vivid Broadcast. Now numbering more than 250 messages,
they can be viewed on www.thesermon.co.uk Richard comments, “One use that is being found for these sermons occurs when a church minister - short of preachers and with more than one fellowship to look after – is able to project our sermons onto a screen for a grateful congregation.”
Richard was awarded the O.B.E. by Her Majesty the Queen in March 2005. “Over these many years,” he says, “we’ve all been amazed at the vitality that always seemed to keep our Queen alert and fresh for every public occasion.”
