Liz Bewes: 'So missed' says Richard

LIZ BEWES, my darling wife over many years, left this life in the early hours of Sunday, May 28th, 2006, after several months of illness, and not long after we had relinquished the work of All Souls Church in London’s West End, at the end of 2004.

Yet the calling of Christian leaders continues, even when their strongest human support is withdrawn. ‘Don’t cancel things or stop!’ Liz would urge me from her hospital bed. The year of 2005 alone was to create opportunities in no less than three continents. Liz shared and travelled with me for ten golden months, before illness struck and removed her to an altogether higher level of service.

Earlier, with the help of wonderful friends, The Liskeard Trust had been set up, to facilitate the travels and resources of this ministry. The Trust is based at Victoria House, Victoria Road, Buckhurst Hill, Essex IG9 5EX.  It’s Mission Statement:

To support the continuing ministry of Richard and Elisabeth Bewes

Although Liz’s name no longer officially features now, the calling remains unchanged. And the Trust’s logo – of the flying Pegasus figure – is none other than the official Bewes Family Crest, with a fresh meaning for me in its underlying motto: Major ab AdversisGreater in Adversity!

And why ‘Liskeard’? There is a family connection. One of our ancestors was Richard Bewes – he was the first Member of Parliament for the Liskeard constituency in 1384. Liskeard is family territory!

Liskeard (pronounced ‘Liskard’) is an old market town in the south-east of Cornwall. The Bewes family was historically based in Cornwall and Devon, although the name ‘Bewes’ derives originally from Bayeux in France – home of the famous Tapestry.

Leaving that aside, deep thanks must be expressed for the many assurances of supportive prayer that come from many quarters. By God’s grace, the preaching, travelling, writing and on-screen work must continue. Prayer is the main thing. That means more to us in the Liskeard Trust than anything else.
